Some updates and feels like a new start

First the Updates

Hello and if you’re still reading this, thank you! I’ll always be a techwitch and a recent discussion with a friend has reminded me of my passion for technology, individual privacy and security, and finding tech solutions with align with those values. This reminder has also brought me back to blogging here today.

Yikes Proton

Speaking of solutions, previously I’ve advocated for using Proton’s suite of services as a privacy conscious tech provider. Given the recent news, both about the way Proton employees are treated and the culture of the company by their CEO, and the lack of consideration for the privacy and security risks that Proton may be exposing its users to with the aggressive push for AI use, I’m feeling at a bit of a loss and also like I can’t really recommend their services. (For clarity, this was never sponsored and I have always advocated for performing your own research into any tech products you wish to use.)

This also poses a bit of a dilemma in my own life, as currently I am also a Proton customer.

So as I described in my previous post on Enhancing Your Privacy: Email pretty much all accounts we have online are attached to our email address. So now that I am feeling Proton may not be providing the level of privacy and security that I was hoping for, I am a bit deflated when thinking about moving email providers AGAIN, and also how that leaves very little alternatives, as I am not going to self-host and manage an email server (and neither will most people, it’s a lot work and technical complexity.)

It has me feeling like Guillermo, when it comes to what seems like frequently adjusting the services I use, when I learn new information about them that changes how I feel about utilising their services.

It has probably always been, but now is especially feeling like it’s choosing between the “lesser of two evils.” As well as a personal choice between the functionality and connectedness I value to my support networks and people, balanced with technology and companies that align with my personal values.

Anyway, just wanted to highlight that change and that I am looking at Tuta, as a potential replacement. However, that still leaves me with some gaps for a cloud storage provider for backups, but they seem to be the most privacy conscious. Though I have not made a decision yet.

New start

There’s been a number of changes going on in my personal life as well since starting this blog, so it feels good to have come back to explore it again. I will never be a “content creator” so it was never going to be about consistent posting and up to date takes on everything technology, but I do still hope it still remains a fun little personal site to support creating our own spaces on the web.

I have looked at the potential integrations for commenting on Hugo, but for now I think I am going to leave the site as it is, without that ability, but you are always free to connect with me on social media, which right now is primarily Mastodon.

Also this space is primarily where I focus on my technical endeavors and my life as a security engineer, which again, is something I’m reconsidering, in how my role may shift over time. Either way, thanks again for reading and hope you’re enjoying exploring my website.
